PESTS

What are Pests?

A pest is an organism with characteristics that people see as damaging or unwanted, as it harms agriculture through feeding on crops or exploit livestock.

An animal can also be a pest when it causes damage to a wild ecosystem or carries germs. The term pest is used to refer specifically to harmful animals but it also relates to all other harmful organisms, including fungi and viruses. It is possible for an animal to be a pest in one setting but beneficial or domesticated in another.

Crops need to be protected from a variety of different pests, organisms that present a threat to the crop. While we often think of pests as insects, a pest can also be a weed, a disease or an animal (such as a rat) or even bacteria.

How Pests can be controlled ?

Biological pest control

Biological control is a biological method of controlling pests (including insects, mites, weeds and plant diseases) using other living organisms. It relies on rapaciousness, herbivorous or other natural mechanisms, but typically also involves an active human management role. It can be an important component of  programs integrated pest management .

Natural enemies of insect pests, also known as biological control agents, include predators, and pathogens. Biological control agents of plant diseases are most often referred to as antagonists. Biological control agents of weeds include seed predators, herbivores and plant pathogens.

There are three basic types of biological pest control strategies:

1. IMPORTATION:- It involves the introduction of a pest's natural enemies to a new locale where they do not occur naturally. This is usually done by government authorities. In many instances the complex of natural enemies associated with a pest may be inadequate, a situation that can occur when a pest is accidentally introduced into a new geographic area, without its associated natural enemies. These introduced pests are referred to as exotic pests and comprise about 40% of the insect pests.

2. AUGMENTATION:- Augmentation involves the supplemental release of natural enemies, boosting the naturally occurring population. Relatively few natural enemies may be released at a critical time of the season or millions may be released.

 3. CONSERVATION:- The conservation of existing natural enemies in an environment is the third method of biological pest control. Natural enemies are already adapted to the habitat and to the target pest, and their conservation can be simple and cost-effective.

 Mechanical pest control

Mechanical pest control is the management and control of pests using physical means such as fences, barriers or electronic wires. It includes also weeding and change of temperature to control pests. Many farmers at the moment are trying to find sustainable ways to remove pests without harming the ecosystem.

1. HANDPICKING:- The use of human hands to remove harmful insects or other toxic material is often the most common action by gardeners. It is also classified as the most direct and the quickest way to remove clearly visible pests. However, it also has equal disadvantages as it must be performed before damage to the plant has been done and before the key development of insects.

2. Mechanical traps:-
Mechanical traps physical attractants are used in three main ways: to efficiently trap insects, to kill them or to estimate how much many insects there are in the total landmass using sampling method. However, some traps are expensive to produce and can end up benefiting insects rather than harming them.

Physical pest control

Physical Pest Control is a method of getting rid of insects and small rodents  by removing, attacking, or setting up barriers that will prevent further destruction of one's plants. These methods are used primarily for crop growing, but some methods can be applied to homes as well.
